Precautionary measures against COVID 19 has surprisingly reduced the number of flu case in Kerala.
Kerala Government has taken extremely necessary steps to combat the virus by making face masks compulsory from April 29th along with proper hygienic measures and social distancing protocols. This has resulted in a reduction in the number of flu cases by 63% from 2,60,072 in June 2019 to 95,544 cases in June 2020. There is also a sharp dip of 60% seen in the sale of over the counter flu medicines sold by pharmaceutical companies. The health department has also noted a drop in the total number of flu cases and related hospitalizations in 2020 compared to 2019 from 11-12 lakh every year to 7.74 lakhs. This could also be attributed to the fear of the general public towards getting treatment at a hospital due to accidental exposure to the virus, but the drop in the sale of medicines indicates that proper precautionary measures can reduce the flu rate if we are cautious.
