Gagandeep Kang resigned from THSTI: Research committee disbanded.
Gagandeep Kang, first Indian Women Scientist to be elected to Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) of London, resigned as Executive Director of Translational Health Sciences and Technology Institute(THSTI), a public based research institute under the ministry of science and technology, Department of Biotechnology, Faridabad.
A team of medical scientists under her guidance working on COVID-19 vaccines and drugs got disbanded. The resignation was due to certain personal reasons, she said. Dr. Kang had been a part of THSTL since 2016 and had one more year to complete her tenure.
THSTL was permitted to test novel coronavirus as an extension of ESIC medical college and hospital, Faridabad under the leadership of Dr. Kang. Researches had been going on to develop antigen tests for efficient checking of Sars-CoV-2. The team is under complete shut down, and efforts to reallocate the lost research are taken up by other scientists.
Dr. Kang played a vital role in the development of India’s rotavirus vaccine, cholera, and typhoid by conducting large studies to understand its impact on mankind. She had been a part of various scientific advisory panels of both national and international institutions including WHO, International Vaccine Institute, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, etc. She currently serves as Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
